Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked taking part in different card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these particular card games as he was playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and relocated to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on the game.

The real advancement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
