Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play many hours and fail to win most times. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he possibly could boost his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and concentrate more on poker.

The real advancement in his game began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently play against one another. He was able to access a few of the foremost players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking techniques. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to compete in more tournaments.
